CLUB YOLO - Better Than Owning a Boat

Long before I lived on Vancouver Island, I craved time on the water. I was the crazy Albertan who would visit in February and rent a kayak just so I could get out there. It would’ve been even better if I could toss a line in or drop a prawn trap, but I was content at the time to pack a sandwich in my dry bag and cruise up Tod Inlet.

When we finally moved here in 2016, I discovered that just because you live near the ocean, doesn’t mean it’s easy to float your boat. Finding moorage at a local marina is difficult at best (and expensive), parking a trailer in the yard isn’t something the neighbours appreciate, and making the time and energy to purchase, maintain and winterize a boat is complicated.

Which is why I was intrigued to hear about the Club YOLO Membership program offered by AdventureCo. Destinations at the Mill Bay and Port Sidney Marinas. AdventureCo. Destinations is a division of Mill Bay Marine Group (MBMG), helping people like me create great experiences. I sat down with Marlese Plater of MBMG to learn more.

First off, what’s the catch? I mean this sounds like the perfect solution to every boater’s dreams!

There is no catch! Much like shared ownership in a vacation club, you have access to multiple boats which you reserve in advance. There is a one-time membership fee and then affordable monthly payments. Aside from that, your only costs are your fuel. NO moorage fees. NO insurance fees. NO maintenance fees. No catch!

How many boats are available?

We currently have 3 boats of varying styles in each of the Mill Bay and Port Sidney marinas. The ratio is 1 boat for 8 members, which allows plenty of time for everyone to get out on the water.

Can I bring my family with me? How about pets?

Yes, as long as a member is driving the boat, you can bring friends and family with you. We also have one pet-friendly boat at each marina.

Can I use them for fishing?

Absolutely! Each vessel is outfitted with fish finders, downrigger mounts, navigational equipment, chart plotters, and all the requisite safety gear. All you need to bring is your current license, fishing gear and a cooler to store your catch.

What certifications are required?

Members will be required to have their Pleasure Craft Operator Card and will be permitted day trips only in their first year.

Can we take the boats overnight?

After you have been a member for a full year, you can take the boats overnight. In fact, many members like to explore the Gulf Island and then stay overnight in a Yurt at Port Browining on Pender Island.
